Society Events to Put on Your 2008 Calendar-Treasures in Your Attic April 20By ROBERT SCHOELLER 2008 This year’s Treasures in Your Attic event promises to be more exciting than the last, which was a great success. Put the date on your calendar: April 20, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Don Short is again graciously donating space in his West End Architectural Salvage building, which is now in a new location at 9th and Cherry Streets in downtown
Des Moines. The site is under the 9th Street Bridge on the south side of downtown.
The new four-story venue exceeds anticipation, with treasures ranging from antique furniture, hardware, adornments including many gargoyles and church brasses. This 1913 structure was originally a grocers warehouse and has been completely restored. Amenities include easy parking and a coffee bar with treats on the first floor.
You are encouraged to bring your treasures from home for evaluation by knowledgeable experts from around Iowa, who will provide verbal (nonbinding) evaluations. Areas of specialty will include Asian arts, silver, textiles, prints and paintings. Evaluations will be $5 per piece, with no limit. Its an opportunity to find out if you have a fake or a treasure.
Be sure to mark your fall calendar for the seventh annual Destination: Victorian Iowa Tour, slated for September 23 and 24. These tours are absolutely exceptional events and a bargain at any price, falling in the $250 range. All meals and overnight accommodations, as well as tours of the homes, are included in the package.
Expert planning, interesting history and conviviality this tour has it all. We will depart Des Moines Tuesday morning, September 23, and return by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 24. Hostess with the Mostest Phyllis Craig has a full schedule planned.
Morning begins on the bus, with the first stop in Bedford and a tour of two Victorian homes. Following lunch in Bedford, the bus departs for Clarinda, where the group will visit the home and memorial of Jesse Fields, founder of 4-H. Two Victorian homes in Clarinda will be toured before moving on to Red Oak for the evening dinner event and overnight stay. Following breakfast, the group will tour three Victorian homes of exceptional quality in Red Oak. After lunch, the bus departs for Des Moines.
