Holiday Spirit Times Two

September 10, 2009

The 13th annual Holly & Ivy Tour takes on a new dimension this December. The popular holiday tradition of touring two of Iowas most magnificent mansions will extend guest hours into the night. On December 4 and 5, the homes decked in holly and ivy will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Holiday decorations will showcase the unique character and design of each mansion. Visitors will not only step into the grand-scale holiday festivity, but will also discover creative decorating ideas. A treat for the senses, Holly & Ivy offers seasonal music and holiday treats at both locations.
Self-guided tours allow time for unhurried holiday shopping in two charming gift shops, where proceeds benefit the historic homes. The Carriage House at Terrace Hill gift shop and the Salisbury Gift Shop offer unique art, books and gifts.
Terrace Hill, a Second Empire Victorian mansion built by B.F. Allen in 1869 and purchased by F.M. Hubbell in 1884, is now home to Iowas governors. This year features a re-creation of a Hubbell-era Christmas tree as well as a unique Victorian feather tree with vintage ornaments.
Salisbury House & Gardens, a 16th century English-style historic house and museum, was built by cosmetics magnate Carl Weeks in the 1920s. Songs of the Season will be the decorating theme throughout Salisbury House.
Admission for the Holly & Ivy Tour is $15 for adults and $6 for children under 12. A special family value pack will be offered at $40. (No strollers please.) Reservations are not required, and tickets can be purchased at either Salisbury House & Gardens or Terrace Hill. For additional information or to make a group reservation for 20 or more guests, call 515-281-3604. Proceeds from Holly & Ivy benefit the historic preservation and renovation of Salisbury House & Gardens and Terrace Hill. As the holidays draw near, visit www.salisburyhouse.org and www.terracehill.org for updated information on Holly & Ivy.
