Garden Party Report: Perfect Gathering, Perfect Weekend

2003

Manicured lawns, soothing jazz and beautiful weather set the stage for a memorable Garden Party on the south lawn at Terrace Hill on June 13, sponsored by the Terrace Hill Society and the Des Moines Founders Garden Club.

Guests entering the impressive white tent were treated to dazzling flower displays atop white linen-covered tables as well as multitiered food stations. The elaborate arrangements, donated by area florists, were awarded to the highest bidders in a silent auction.

In a separate ceremony, Governor Tom Vilsack dedicated the newly restored Victorian fountain in memory of the late Bonnie Koch of Hampton. Family and friends donated the restoration funds to recognize her many years as a Terrace Hill tour guide volunteer.

The garden party kicked off two days of garden activities, sponsored by the Des Moines Founders Garden Club.

“From the garden party to the garden walk and talks, it was a spectacular weekend of entertainment and education,” said Janis Ruan, Des Moines Founders Garden Club member and Garden Party Committee co-chair. “We are pleased to donate the proceeds to our chosen projects and look forward to seeing them flourish.”

Fundraiser recipients are Terrace Hill, Salisbury House, Fleur Drive Beautification, Community Gardens and other projects of the Des Moines Founders Garden Club.
