WELCOME HOME!

2007

With the arrival of the Culvers in early 2007, Terrace Hill welcomed its fourth first family. The family of four moved from their West Des Moines home into 2300 Grand after a flurry of renovations to the third-floor private residence.

Rooms in the private residence had not been painted, papered or carpeted in eight years, nor had the kitchen been updated in more than 25 years. Furthermore, it has been a long time since children called Terrace Hill home, meaning many features throughout the third floor had to be child-proofed to ensure the safety of its newest residents.

Private funds were raised for the renovation under the leadership of Commission Chair Jim Hubbell, III, Commissioner J. D. Hartung, and Foundation Development Director Jacqueline Devine. No state funding was used in this project.

First Lady Mari Culver played an active role in the renovation, working with designers for the selection of styles, colors, fabrics, and other surface materials. Interim Administrator Brian Browning worked with contractors to turn the first lady’s ideas into reality.

An upcoming Landmark article will detail the project and acknowledge the contributors to the long-overdue improvements in the living quarters of Iowa’s chief executive and family. Tax-deductible contributions may still be made to the Foundation for third-floor renovation. Contributions may be mailed to the Terrace Hill Foundation, 2300 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312. Please indicate “Third-Floor Renovation.”
