Silver Legacy: Hubbell Tea ServiceBy ROBERT SCHOELLER 2008 Terrace Hill recently became the recipient of a magnificent Francis I silver tea service set that was originally a gift to Anne Godfrey Hubbell from her in-laws, the Frederick M. Hubbells. The Frances I solid silver tea service from Reed & Barton was, and is, considered one of the most highly collectible sterling patterns in the world.
Passed from eldest daughter to eldest daughter, the service passed from Frances Cooper Hubbell Ingham to her daughter Patty Ingham Davis and will remain on extended loan. The service, enjoyed by generations, is a welcome addition to Terrace Hill, where it will be displayed prominently and used for special occasions.
As a sidelight, Frances Hubbell Ingham had a brief tenure as a candidate for the office of vice president of the United States, which daughter Patty relates she enjoyed playing to the hilt. Frances Inghams friend, philanthropist Joe Rosenfeld, was a strong supporter of moderate independent John B. Anderson of Illinois in his run for the presidency in the 1980 election. Andersons run was complicated by the fact that it was necessary in Iowa to name a vice-presidential candidate on the ticket. At Rosenfelds persuasion, Frances Ingham accepted the challenge and, for a short time, reveled in her position.
