Historic Photos and Albums Provide A Peek into the PastBy David L. Cordes, Terrace Hill Administrator 2004 A priceless photo album that belonged to F. C. Hubbell and dates to the early 1890s has been donated to Terrace Hill by James Hubbell, Jr., and his wife Helen. The images are crisp and clear and provide valuable original photos, of which we had only copies in the past.
Historic photos on display at the Visitor Center in the carriage house at Terrace Hill attract a great deal of attention from visitors. There are two categories of photos: images of the Hubbell family and images of the interior and exterior of the mansion.
While many people will peruse a dozen or so images in a matter of a minute, it is also quite common for guests to spend 15 minutes or more examining the details in just a few photos.
Its interesting to note that while guests will look at the images of people and read the accompanying information, the time a person spends looking at an image of a room is much longer. The rooms, furniture and accessories are a representation of the people who lived here and the lives that they led.
While photos may not tell us with specificity what a persons deeds or accomplishments were, they provide an incredible insight, in more general terms, into the persons overall accomplishments, tastes, travels and preferences. More over, these images allow us to look back in time; they provide us with the vicarious ability to begin to understand what life at Terrace Hill might have been like if we had lived here more than 100 years ago.
