Terrace Hill to be a host site for Des Moines school districts Gifted and Talented Summer School ProgramBy Carla Herling 2004 Students will spend three weeks, June 7 to 25, 2004 at Terrace Hill creating artwork, discussing architectural history, and learning from local scholars and experts. The workshop, Victorian Art and Architecture, is one of five sponsored by the Des Moines Public Schools Gifted and Talented Summer School Program for fifth- and sixth-grade students.
This is the first time Terrace Hill will be a host for the 20-year-old program. Different cultural institutions throughout the community serve as host locations for in-depth summer school studies to challenge high-achieving students. Kathy Marek, the programs teacher, said, The setting and planned activities will provide the students a glimpse of what life was like during the Victorian era and create a pride in our great city and a sense of belonging in the community.
Welcoming students to Terrace Hill is an essential part of developing the next generation of historical preservationists. Donna Davilla, director of the Gifted and Talented program, said, The opportunity to experience this exquisite Victorian structure and grounds will leave a lasting impression on the students fortunate enough to be in this class.
