Hubbell papers given to State Historical Society2001 The descendants of F. M. Hubbell have recently given “a treasure trove of epic journals and documents” to the State Historical Society of Iowa. The documents include F. M. Hubbell’s diaries, which date from 1855, and records related to Hubbell’s real estate, public utility, railroad and trust transactions.
The gift of documents was received by Governor Thomas J. Vilsack and Lt. Governor Sally Pederson on behalf of all Iowans at a ceremony at the Iowa Historical Building. Preservation of the historic papers will be funded by a $400,000 donation that the Hubbell family plans to make.
State Archivist Gordon Hendrickson says the Hubbell documents, which have been stored in the Hubbell Building in downtown Des Moines since before 1930, will be “immensely valuable” to students of Iowa history.
